Abstract

Objectives: to evaluate for yield, two planting densities (125,000 and 714,000 seeds/ha) and six bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) landraces:  Mantequilla, Nica, Revuelto, Sesenteno, Turrialba and Vaina Blanca.  Methodology: planting was carried out in Matambuguito, Nicoya, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, on sloping soil, and with low input use.  Results: planting density did not have a significant effect on grain production, but there were significant differences among bean landraces:  Sesenteno showed a higher yield (329.38kg/ha) compared to Turrialba and Vaina Blanca (137.19kg/ha).  Conclusions: This is the first report about the effect of planting density on yield of common bean landraces from Costa Rica.
